Queensland Real Estate CPD FAQ: What You Need to Know for 2025 and Beyond
As of 6 June 2025, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) becomes a legal requirement for all real estate professionals in Queensland. Whether you're a licensed real estate agent, registered salesperson, or resident letting agent, staying compliant means completing a minimum amount of CPD each year. Below is your comprehensive, user-friendly guide to navigating the new CPD requirements.
1. Are there CPD requirements for QLD real estate?
Yes. From 6 June 2025, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) requires all Queensland property professionals holding a real estate licence or certificate to complete approved CPD training each year. These requirements ensure that real estate practitioners are up to date with relevant legislation, ethical practices, and changing market trends in the property industry.
2. Who needs to complete CPD in Queensland?
All professionals working in the real estate industry who hold a current licence or registration must complete CPD. This includes:
- Residential and commercial sales agents
- Residential and commercial property managers
- Buyer's agents
- Auctioneers
- Business brokers
- Resident letting agents
Whether you're a new registered salesperson or a long-time licensed agent, CPD obligations apply.
3. What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
CPD is structured learning designed to improve your skills, ensure compliance with existing laws, and enhance consumer protections. It helps real estate practitioners deliver better service and build greater confidence with clients, which contributes to fewer professional indemnity claims and a stronger property industry overall.
The OFT has approved selected, specific learning and development modules for you to choose from across multiple training providers. The OFT has set a minimum requirement of modules you must undertake each year to renew your real estate licence.
4. When do I need to start doing CPD?
For many real estate professionals who have always attended training and events, this new requirement will require you to keep relevant evidence of the courses you’ve undertaken.
From the next anniversary of your licence or certificate issue date you will need to ensure that you complete a minimum of two OFT-approved CPD modules over the course of that year. For example, if your issue anniversary date is 1 August, the OFT requires you to start keeping evidence of your CPD courses from this date.
5. What are the annual CPD requirements?
Each CPD year begins on the anniversary date of the issuing of your licence or certificate. During this CPD year, you must complete:
- Two approved CPD sessions:
- One Type 1 CPD session and one Type 2 CPD session, or
- Two Type 1 CPD sessions
The OFT considers 2–3 hours for each compulsory session sufficient
6. What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 CPD sessions?
Type 1 sessions are designed to promote and improve core skills.
A Type 1 session is either:
- an accredited unit of competency delivered by a registered training organisation (such as the REIQ) drawn from nationally accredited real estate qualifications; or
- an approved, condensed 'CPD version' of one of the above units from an approved qualification.
7. Who provides the training?
The OFT has qualified a number of training providers to align with their minimum CPD requirements. The REIQ is the leading real estate training provider in Queensland. - Online self-paced learning

8. What tools are available to help track CPD activities?
To support compliance, REIQ will offer:
- A CPD year tracker and calculator ensuring you are able to easily manage your CPD requirements

This ensures your registration remains current and your training is logged for future reference.
9. Are there any exemptions from CPD?
Yes. The Office of Fair Trading recognises exceptional circumstances and provides exemptions in specific cases:
- Within 12 months of initial licence/certificate issue
- If your licence or registration is deactivated for most of the year
- For affordable housing or business letting limited licences
- For public sector agents or government officials under the Property Occupations Act 2024

You need to ensure that a CPD Type 1 and a CPD Type 2 module form a part of your professional development plan for the year. All REIQ training and events will clearly indicate which Type of CPD they are if they are OFT-compliant.
